Use revenue and operating expenses for the same dates and currency. Account for the business’s actual operating history.
Inventory, suppliers, processes and reliance on the owner affect transferability. Separate assets from projected future earnings.
Profitable, break-even and loss-making stores with revenue can use the tool. Where evidence is insufficient, results explain the uncertainty rather than promise a price.
Revenue shows sales activity. Profit also reflects the cost of products, advertising, fulfilment and running the store. Use the same currency and completed reporting period for each input. Monthly averages and annual totals are different ways to describe that period—not different valuations of the same figures.
Assume USD 240,000 annual revenue and USD 180,000 operating expenses over twelve completed months. That is $60,000 operating profit: monthly averages of $20,000 revenue, $15,000 expenses and $5,000 profit. Enter annual totals or their matching monthly averages consistently.
A purely illustrative 2×–3× annual-profit assumption would produce $120,000–$180,000 before considering the business’s actual risks and included assets. This is arithmetic, not a researched comparable-sale range or the tool’s prescribed multiple. The tool uses your business model and answers; growth, history and founder dependence can change its estimate.
Do not call this operating-profit figure seller discretionary earnings without reviewing the relevant adjustments. Do not automatically add inventory at retail price. Record stock condition and agree its treatment separately.
